Seeded Pironkova and Peer ousted, two Hungarian victories in the first round

Georgia’s Anna Tatishvili defeated No. 3 seed Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the opening round of the Budapest Grand Prix on Monday, despite the fact that the Bulgarian is almost 40 places ahead of the Georgian in the world rankings.

The other seeded player to exit the tournament in the first round on Monday was Israeli Shahar Peer, a quarterfinalist in Budapest in 2009. This year, she was No. 7 seed but lost to Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada in two sets: 4-6, 3-6.

In an unfortunate incident, American Varvara Lepchenko had to retire – due to a right ankle injury – when 5-0 down in the first set against Russia’s Elena Vesnina.

As for the Hungarian players, only one made it to the second round on Monday. The battle of two wild card holder Hungarian youngsters, Vanda Lukács beat Henrietta Habler 6-2, 6-1.

As a surprise, world No. 69 Hungarian Gréta Arn lost to Lesia Tsurenko of the Ukraine 6-3, 3-6, 1-6.

The fourth Hungarian to play in the singles main draw on Monday was Csilla Borsányi but she lost 6-0, 7-5 to 6th-seed Petra Martic of Croatia.

The only Hungarian in the doubles main draw on Monday, Katalin Marosi – paired with Georgia’s Anna Tatishvili -, defeated Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan and Alicja Rosolska of Poland 7-5, 7-6 (5).
